Sing it! with Kristyn Getty

Today we’re chatting with Kristyn Getty, an award-winning singer-songwriter. Her voice is synonymous with hymns, having co-founded with her husband, Keith, the Getty Music Organization, which helps people learn the Bible through hymns to carry for life. She is particularly passionate about helping children and families learn their faith through song. Today we talk about singing God’s Word and how our lives ought to sing his praises. NOTEWORTHY QUOTES

“Singing helps us in our spiritual formation. It’s critical to our understanding of the Lord. The language that we sing becomes the language we use to pray and the language we use to share our faith.”

“God calls all of us to sing. It’s a command in Scriptures. We’ve been created to sing.”

“The wonderful Gospel story compels us to sing.”

“Our singing should be a way in which we let the Word of God dwell in us richly.”

“Authentic worship begins with an authentic understanding of the God of the Bible.”

“Authentic worship is our minds and hearts filled with who God is.

“Our worship comes as a response to the revelation of what God has done and said and what he has shared with us and enabled us to know and be part of as the body of Christ.”

“When we sing, we remember.”

“The sound of worship is the sound of the church—all singing together.”

“The act of singing unifies us in extraordinary ways and connects us together as the body.”

“The best way for us to express our unity is to stand together singing.”

“Congregational singing is such a blessing in that in those moments when you are struggling you have someone else singing with you and for you.”

“Keep going and singing and reaching for the thing God has given us. He’s given us his Word, he’s given us prayer, he’s given us singing. These basic things that never change that are always there that have been used for the benefit of the church for generations. We just have to keep stepping in, moving in, receiving, singing, praying.”

“As we read the Word and as we pray, singing goes with those things, and we just have to keep on pressing in.”

“Hymns are intended to portray a gospel arch.”

“Our singing is an outpouring of our daily walk with the Lord. It’s very hard to sing with a full heart and focus on the Lord if you have spent the whole week not thinking about him. But the more you’re in the Word and praying and in Christian community and all those little markers in your daily life that lift you up towards him, then you will have a bigger, greater, deeper song to sing.”

“Every day is a brand new day, his mercy is new every morning. The manna is there—come and get it.”
