ep. 68 | Submission with Jill Atogwe
On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I’m chatting with Jill Atogwe on the topic of submission. We talked about everything from submitting to the Lord, to how doing so actually enables us to joyfully submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
So you’ll know her a little better, Jill is the woman behind the lifestyle blog Gold & Graphite, and her goal is to make her life beautiful and glorify God with everything he has entrusted to her. She has been married to her husband Oshiomogho, for 7 years and she is mama to her 3.5 year old son, Oshiolema, and her nearly-2-year-old daughter, Keogena.
I am so thankful for Jill’s encouragement to submit our whole lives to the Lord, to submit to one another out of reverence for Christ, and, for the married gals, to walk in joyful submission to our hubbies.
Can you tell us a little about who you are and what you do?
What is submission?
Is submission something that comes to you naturally?
When did submission become difficult? Why is this concept so difficult for us today?
Where do we see the practice of submission in Scripture?
What does Scripture mean when it says submit to one another out of reverence for Christ?
What does it look like for you to walk in submission within the context of your Christian community?
Moving on in Ephesians 5, then we see that wives are to submit to their husbands. What else does Scripture say in regard to submission within marriage?
Have you ever struggled with viewing yourself or your role as a wife as less important because you are being asked to submit to your husband? What's a more appropriate/accurate/Biblical view to maintain?
What are some things that submission is NOT?
What does it look like for you, practically, to walk in submission to a decision that your husband is making, even if you don't agree with it?
What joy do you experience when you're walking in submission?
THREE QUESTIONS I ASK EVERY GUEST
What 3 resources would you recommend for someone who desires to grow in this area?
What are your 3 simple joys?
Who has had the greatest impact on your own journey with Jesus?
“Submission is coming under someone else’s will out of obedience.”
“Yes, it’s ideal that our husbands submit to the Lord. But even if not, we will still submit.”
“We give reverence to Christ by following his example of love. The perfect example of submission is in the Trinity, with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit being fully equal and yet Christ willingly submitted to the Father out of of love.”
“Submission is an ugly word in the culture. We are all created equal, and yet we willingly choose to submit to one another out of love for Christ and each other.”
“For some reason in church, we fall into this temptation of pride. We want to be served and believe that we know best. We want the pastor to talk more about this topic and less about this topic. We have thoughts on worship. He puts those people in authority and God will use the people in authority for our good and for his glory.”
“Submission does not reflect importance or value. It simply reflects order. That was life changing for me.”
“Submission is not submitting in place of God. Our husbands do not become our God because we are submitted to them. We still are submitted to the Lord and bring it to God to allow him to do that work in us.”
“We were never intended to be God and decide what should happen when and what we deserve and what is best for ourselves. That is too heavy a burden for us and it feels wrong and it feels stressful because it is.”
“Dying to self doesn’t sound pleasant and it’s not this blissful experience, but the fruit of it is so wonderful. And to start feeling the baby steps of getting better at it and having less rebellion in your spirit. The more you do it, the more natural it is, and the less fight there is in it.”
