Life on Life Discipleship with PaToya Hall & Kimberly Wootten

On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast we get to hear from Kimberly Wootten and PaToya Hall about discipleship, specifically, the importance of seeking out life on life discipleship over learning online.

Kimberly Wootten, known as Kimbo, is the Communication & Development Director at the Journeywomen Podcast. God has called her to be a light in dark places and has specifically designed her to bring order to chaos. Kimbo loves to find efficient and effective solutions to solve problems. She is married and has one son. Originally from Texas, she currently lives in Clarksville, Tennessee where her husband serves in the military. Kimbo loves to see others thrive in their God-given design and loves meeting new friends.

PaToya is an aspiring writer, lover of children’s books, and a real life fan of Jesus. She’s a member of Grace Church in Waco, TX and works full time at Baylor University. PaToya’s passion is to empower women to fight the myth that there’s a gap between Jesus’ words and life’s daily challenges, and to live in the freedom only found in Christ.

  1. What is discipleship? Where do we see the command to make disciples and to be discipled in Scripture?

  2. What are we trying to teach our disciples? If discipleship is a relationship between a teacher and a learner, what is it that we hope they’ll learn from our time together?

  3. How has discipleship impacted your relationship with the Lord?

  4. What is/was the most potent discipleship relationship you've experienced?

  5. Why is it important to be discipled in a local church context? What's the benefit to leaning into local discipleship over learning from women online?

  6. What dangers might we face when we aren't engaged in discipleship relationships with people in our own proximity?

  7. What has your experience with discipleship in the local church been like?

  8. What encouragement do you have for women who really want to be discipled but who don't feel like they have access to a woman in their proximity who can offer that to them?

  9. What encouragement do you have for women who really want to make disciples but who don't feel equipped to do so?

TWO QUESTIONS WE’RE ASKING EVERY GUEST THIS SEASON

  1. How have you seen yourself grow in your ability to make disciples? What has been the most helpful practice/thing you’ve done to develop this skill?

  2. What’s one question you would encourage women to ask an older woman in their life, maybe even today, after listening to this conversation?

NOTEWORTHY QUOTES

Discipleship is teaching in the day to day to obey Jesus as we go and live our lives.”

“In Matthew 28:19-20, what disciple means there is ‘a follower of Christ who learns the doctrines of Scripture and the lifestyle they require.’ Being a disciple is not just someone that takes in head knowledge, but they’ve translated that into walking that out in their life.  A disciple knows who Christ is and lives their life as a result of that.”

“Hopefully we are teaching [those we disciple] who Christ is, how he impacts their life, and how to share him with someone else. If we are not teaching people Jesus, then we are making disciples of ourselves.”

“I can either allow Jesus to shape my life or I can hold onto my own desires.”

“That [those we disciple] would know and love God and then teach others.”

“Ultimately you want the best for your [disciples] but their best would be to love God. The best thing we can all have and hold and cling to is who God is.”

“How do we love God and how can we love people? How can you ultimately love God with all of your being and then from the overflow of that, love people?”

“In the Word we find the richness of the gospel.”

“"God is intentional over the people that are in your local body. It’s hard to be the church by yourself. God is mindful of the things that we need and the things we are blind to.”

“Discipleship is life on life. It is person on person.”

“It’s very easy to be led by my sins. Without discipleship and someone guiding me through how I do this phase of life, I don’t know what it looks like to glorify the Lord.”

“What a gift of the Lord to give us other believers to walk alongside us.”

“We underestimate the gift of discipleship in life.”

“We were created for community and the opposite of community is isolation.”

“Finding friends or mentors who are willing to walk through life with you can be really, really difficult! But that’s why it’s so important to find a local church and we have resources for how to go about that from our church series. It’s in living in community with other people that you begin to get a taste of what it talks about in 1 John where it says, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” It’s in the fellowship with other people that we bump up against one another and we get exposed to the light. Stepping into community with other people and stepping into the light is where we can experience the freedom and life that Christ offers.”

“We are not asking people to follow us, we are asking them to follow Christ.”

“Even in our failures we can point to Christ. That points to the gospel, we can’t do it on our own.”

“Don’t discredit who the Lord has brought into your life.”

“Remember that God is the one that qualifies you. Remember your salvation.”

“There’s really no rule book as you follow after God and you do life with other women. Be a student of Jesus and be a student of them. Don’t rely on your knowledge.”

“Be a learner of who you’re discipling.”

“We are not leading people to us, we are leading them to Christ. You are qualified because Christ has done a work in you.”

“Make disciples, not excuses.” - Matt Lantz

“Invite someone into your life and ask them questions.”

“We only enter into the Kingdom of heaven by acknowledging our need.”
